Music of Hawai'i
Folkways Records was founded by Moses Ash in 1948; The Smithsonian Institute has since bought the company and the University of Alberta has partnered with Folkways Records to form folkwaysAlive! Folkways Records is known for its style which comes from the quick and economic production of albums that has always been typical of Folkways. Album artwork produced by Folkways should be a marriage of sound and art; content should be thoughtfully considered and the production shouldn’t be extravagant. Deliverables included the designed album artwork, packaging and liner notes for the chosen album. I created an album for a Smithsonian Folkway’s playlist called Music of Hawai’i. The track list has variety in instruments, voice and tone. Because the music that makes up this album is not of a specific style, I focused instead on the atmosphere of Hawai’i when designing the album. This illustrative design enhances the listener’s feeling of being immersed in Hawaiian culture and music.
